"John of the Cross" – The Fire of Purification

This striking portrait captures the spiritual intensity of John of the Cross, the mystic poet and saint whose journey through the "Dark Night of the Soul" led to divine illumination. Rendered in deep purples, golds, and stark contrasts, his face emerges from the shadows, lifted toward a transcendent light. The sacred manuscripts clutched in his hand symbolize the wisdom born from suffering, while the halo and red outline suggest the burning fire of purification. This powerful composition reflects the transformation of the soul through trial, leading to ultimate union with the divine.

This painting was created on a 24"x18" birch wood panel. The texture you can notice is venetian plaster that was layered with alcohol ink, sanded and re-layered until the desired depth was achieved. In addition acrylic paint and other mixed media was used. The final layer of this piece consists of oil paint.
